Plant Assessor is changing machinery safety labels

Written by Plant Assessor | October 2019

Here at Plant Assessor, we’re into disrupting things. The latest on our hit list is the humble machinery safety label. Here’s a summary of what we have done.

  1. New colours:  More vibrant images and more accurate reflection of Standards

  2. Better images:  More machine specific and hazard specific images

  3. Risk ratings:  Displayed on labels means more accurate recognition of risks

  4. More sizes:  Wider range allowing better matching of label size to machine type

The importance of good machinery safety labels

Machine safety can rely on the operator being made aware of a hazard or risk by visual means, meaning signs or safety stickers are often the most practicable solution to managing risks.

To be effective, the labels need to be in place, noticed, understood and heeded.

So why change?

Plant Assessor has been a leading supplier of machinery safety labels for more than 10 years. In our quest for continuous improvement, we identified opportunities to improve several aspects of traditional label design to make them more effective.

The new range of machinery safety stickers are eye-catching with their colours, shape and sizes so that they are seen and noticed on the machine (see examples below.) One size does not fit all, and where appropriate the labels are available in varying sizes, making them suitable for smaller or larger machines.

Clear and modern graphic images, combined with minimal written text, ensure warnings are easily understood. The risk rating associated with the hazard is clearly displayed, something that no other machinery safety stickers on the market provide. This avoids the subjectivity and guess work traditionally required to determine the risk associated with a warning label.

The risk ratings on labels are linked to the critical information in the relevant Plant Assessor Risk Assessment/Risk Management Report, reinforcing where dangers exist and care must be taken.

Plant Assessor risk assessments identify the hazards specific to the machine and check that the risk controls required are in place. The system enables you to list the safety label controls needed and quickly order the specific items for that individual machine. A simple, straight-through process that makes it easy to fit the labels to the machine.

Aligned to the format of ISO 9244:2008 (International Standard for Machinery – Earth-moving machinery – Machine Safety Labels – General Principles) as there is no specific Australian standard for machinery safety labels, these labels have greater relevance and consistency than those derived from the outdated 1994 Australian Standard (AS 1319:1994 – Safety Signs for the Occupational Environment), which covers signs in general.
