How to keep your plant in top condition

Written by Matt Turner | March 2024

Plants are not just decorative additions to our homes; they're living organisms that require care and attention to thrive.

Whether you're a seasoned plant lover or just starting to cultivate your green thumb, maintaining your plants is crucial for their health and longevity. Here are some essential tips to help you keep your plants in top condition.

1. Understand your plant's needs

Different plants have different requirements when it comes to sunlight, water, temperature, and humidity. Before bringing a new plant home, research its specific needs. Some plants thrive in bright, indirect light, while others prefer low-light conditions. Understanding these requirements is fundamental to providing the right environment for your plants to thrive.

2. Provide adequate lighting

Light is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light into energy. Ensure your plants receive the appropriate amount of light based on their needs. Rotate them periodically to ensure even growth and prevent them from leaning towards the light source.

3. Water wisely

Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes made by plant owners. It's essential to water your plants according to their individual needs and the conditions of your home. Some plants prefer consistently moist soil, while others prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Check the soil moisture before watering and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

4. Choose the right pot and soil

The type of pot and soil you use can significantly impact your plant's health. Ensure your pots have proper drainage to prevent waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Use well-draining soil specific to your plant's needs, whether it's cactus mix for succulents or potting mix for tropical plants.

5. Maintain optimal humidity

Indoor environments can often be drier than what many plants prefer. Increase humidity by misting your plants regularly, placing a tray of water near them, or using a humidifier. This is particularly important for tropical plants that thrive in humid conditions.

6. Fertiliser regularly but moderately

Fertilising provides plants with essential nutrients for growth. However, too much fertiliser can lead to nutrient burn and other issues. Follow the instructions on the fertiliser package and only fertilise during the plant's active growing season.

7. Prune and groom

Regular pruning not only keeps your plants looking neat and tidy but also promotes healthy growth. Remove dead or yellowing leaves, trim overgrown branches and pinch off old flowers to encourage new growth. Grooming also helps prevent pests and diseases from taking hold.

8. Monitor for pests and diseases

Keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids, mealybugs and spider mites, as well as signs of disease such as wilting, yellowing leaves or unusual spots. Early detection is key to preventing infestations and treating diseases effectively.

9. Give them space

Avoid overcrowding your plants as this can lead to competition for resources and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases. Provide adequate spacing between plants to allow for proper airflow and light penetration.

10. Be patient and observant

Growing plants is a learning process and not every plant will thrive immediately. Be patient and observant, paying attention to how your plants respond to different conditions and adjusting your care routine accordingly.
